L ady
Capcom leaves a lot of things up in the air so this is all written in my own words though I'm trying to
stick to fact and things which the games suggest.
Bio:
Despite her innocent appearance Lady is a professional demon hunter. She has a burning hatred of demons
which, we can assume, was set in motion after her father destroyed her life by murdering her mother in order to
aid his transformation into a full demon.
Lady's motives throughtout the game are purely vengeful, she feels it is her 'duty' to destroy her father
and won't stand for others (mainly Dante) getting in her way. She's stubborn, but determind, she can hold her own
against Dante in a fight (though Dante may not have been trying hard to win). However she lets her hatred of
everything demonic (even hybrids like Dante) blind her - and she doesn't even think twice about both shooting
Dante and firing a huge missile at him.
At the beginning of the game Lady appears as an ‘uninvited guest’ though Arkham has in fact planned for
her arrival all along. During mission 13 Jester, who reveals himself to be Arkham, informs the three that Sparda
did not only sacrifice his own blood, but the blood of a mortal priestess to seal the gates to the Demon World.
‘He sacrificed two things to suppress the tremendous force of this tower: His own Devil’s blood and a mortal
priestess. I needed you, in whose body flows the same blood as the sacrificed woman. His spell cannot be undone
without your blood!’
Arkham over-powers Lady and stabs her in the leg – leaving a scar which will be with her for life - and
releasing enough blood for the spell to be broken.
Lady has forsaken the name she was given at birth stating that ‘only her mother could call her’ it. When
she informs Dante that she does not have a name he opts to call her Lady and despite her apparent hatred of him
and everything demonic she uses this name right before she kills her father.
‘Mary died a long time ago, my name is Lady.’
It is possible this line is in someway metaphoric, showing that the small girl who was once Mary and had
her life destroyed has grown up into a ‘Lady’. She finally has the courage to kill her father and reclaim her
life from her vendetta. Or I’m just reading too much into it
With this acceptance of her name comes an acceptance of the man who gave her it. After Dante and Lady
fight in the Divine Library she lends him Kalina Ann to use asking him to ‘free her father’. At the end of the
game when the pair meet she seems to have given up her hatred of Dante and demons. Though she is still on a
mission to rid the world of every last one she finally understands that ‘even a devil may cry’.
