R elationships
All the people Lady meets and knows and how the affect her.
Dante
Perhaps the most important relationship Lady develops during the games. Despite being a demon (and a pig-headed
teenager at that) Dante teaches Lady the valuable lesson that ‘even a devil may cry’.
When Lady first meets Dante it is in the entrance chamber of Temin-Ni-Gru, where after Dante asks her if she’s
‘going to the party’ she fires a missile at him. Dante dodges and rides the rocket around the room blasting a
hole in the ceiling which Lady then jumps her bike through without saying a word.
The next time the pair meet Dante catches her by the ankle after Arkham throws her from one of the higher levels
of Temin-Ni-Gru. Lady responds to her saviour by demanding that he let her go and then shooting him in the head
when Dante doesn’t do what she asks. Dante drops her and she plummets down the side of the tower using her rocket
launcher to halt her decent. When Dante asks her why she shot him, she fires at him again and then acknowledges
that Dante must be a demon. This brings up questions about Lady’s morals. If she was not certain Dante was a
demon the first time she shot him (or when she fired a missile at him) then she didn’t even think twice about
killing what could have possibly been an innocent human.
Luckily for Dante he is a demon though needless to say their relationship gets off on the wrong foot. The pair
meet again in mission 9 where after a brief argument they kill a hoard of demons together and Dante asks Lady her
name. She states that she does not have one and Dante calls her ‘lady’ a name which she adopts towards the end of
the game.
Their next encounter doesn’t go so well, the pair fight when Dante doesn’t deny killing Arkham (though he hasn’t)
and Dante continues to taunt her whilst she gives him an insight into her own ‘dysfunctional family’. When Dante
empathises with her she refuses to accept that Dante can feel human emotions as she can because he is a demon.
When they next meet is in the Divine Library, they fight again, this time Lady doesn’t hold back and by the end
of the fight she accepts that Dante has beaten her. She also seems to have changed her mind about him a little
when she allows him to borrow Kalina Ann to ‘free her father’.
The final time they meet the pair seem to have settled their differences a little. Lady finally understands that
demons can feel emotions after she sees Dante shed a tear for his fallen brother.
After Devil May Cry 3 the pair remain in contact, with Lady giving Dante jobs she cannot deal with and then
charging him a commission for them later. She appears to generally be close by and help him out with a couple
of missions too.
Arkham
Arkham and Lady are the last remnants of a dysfunctional family. Arkham sacrificed his wife (Kalina Ann) in
order to further his studies of the dark arts. He sees this as rectified by the fact that even Sparda sacrificed
a woman though his own intentions are purely evil. Lady’s soul purpose through out the game is to destroy her
father and avenger her mother and her own ruined life. It is unclear when exactly the traumatic death of Kalina
Ann took place, but considering Lady’s skills in hunting and fighting we can assume that it was when she was
quite young.
Despite all this Lady still has a moment of doubt when she believes that Vergil ‘manipulated’ Arkham and
caused him to do all the things he did. She sheds tears over her father’s (supposedly) dead body before turning
her hatred on Vergil.
When she realises she’s been tricked her rage drives her to follow her father up the Temin-Ni-Gru, feeling
that it is her ‘duty’ and maybe even her right to kill him. As she reaches the top of Temin-Ni-Gru Arkham falls
back to the top of the tower. He is already dying after being beaten by Dante and Vergil and asks Lady for help
calling her by her birth name ‘Mary’. She replies that ‘Mary died a long time ago’ and shoots him in the head.
She cries after though it is unclear as to whether it is because she has killed her own father or she has finally
full-filled her quest for revenge.
Vergil
Lady only meets Vergil briefly when she is under the impression that he manipulated her father. She interrupts
a fight between Dante and Vergil only for Vergil to quickly over-power her. She blames him for Arkham’s behaviour
and his reply is to call her foolish. Lady is then left angry and confused though Vergil is quickly proven right
as Jester reveals himself to be Arkham.
She only ever feels anger towards Vergil though it is wrongly placed, and doesn’t meet him for long enough to
evaluate her opinion.
Trish
Lady meets Trish in the DMC Anime, a short time after DMC1. Trish has left Dante and Devil May Cry for a brief
time during the anime. When Lady is hired by a priest to exterminate demons in a town she stumbles across Trish
who she assumes is the source of the problem. The pair continue to fight with each other until Dante walks in on
one of their more heated battles and sets things straight. Trish says she wanted to have some fun as it is hard to
find tough competition though it perhaps went a little too far when the pair could have killed each other in the
process.
When they both realize they’re on the same side their relationship smoothes out. By the end of the anime the
pair are fighting together and stealing Dante’s money to buy clothes.
In DMC4 their relationship still seems to be a little rough around the edges though this could simply be
friendly banter.
